It uses the very popular ClamAV open source antivirus engine as a back end and has the ability to detect both Windows and Mac threats. ClamXav for macOS can be setup up as passive or active: scan only the files you tell it to or your entire hard drive, whichever you prefer; you can also choose to activate Sentry to monitor your hard drive and scan new files as they arrive. robg adds: I haven't tested this one - there's also a GUI version of ClamAV for OS X called ClamXav, if you'd like to try it out without the command line work. Installing
ClamAV can be found for Ubuntu in the apt repository. Run this command to install ClamAV:
apt-get install clamav

Backports

The Ubuntu backports repository will contain the newest clamav version that has been at least lightly tested to work with that version. These packages can be installed by enabling the backports repository on your system.
